So you haven’t renewed your PADI Professional membership in a while. Welcome back! We’re glad to see you here. Below, you’ll find everything you need to know about membership renewals for inactive PADI Pros.

“The strength of the team is each individual member, the strength of each member is the team.” – Coach Phil Jackson.

The PADI Regional Training Consultant team receive hundreds of questions regarding renewals from members around the world. Let’s have a look at some of the common questions we get asked by inactive PADI Pros as well as the answers to those questions.

What happens if I let my membership lapse?

Don’t worry! You can still renew your PADI membership, even if it has lapsed. The first thing to do is to contact your regional PADI Customer Relations team who will take payment for your membership and confirm the actions you need to take to get you started.

I didn’t renew last year; do I have to re-sit my Instructor Examination?

No. We understand how hard the dive professional works to earn their status along with the time and dedication involved in becoming a respected PADI member. We also understand that sometimes life just happens, opportunities arise and diving can occasionally take a back seat. There is no reason you should be punished for that by having to start over again. Retraining varies depending on the circumstances and can be undertaken via several means. Please contact your regional Customer Relations team, who can advise on the best options for you.

How long can I be out of status before I have to re-sit my Instructor Examination?

As previously mentioned, we do all we can to avoid this from happening. You would have to be out of status and away from the industry for a considerable amount of time before that would happen. Even in the event that you are required to complete your IDC and IE again, we will do whatever we can to support you in getting back to teaching status. It’s never too late!

What is required to regain teaching status?

Please contact your Regional Training Consultant who will be able to advise you on the steps you will need to take to regain teaching status.

I have been un-renewed for several years but have remained in the industry; is this taken into account?

We appreciate that job roles can change and maybe your chances of teaching are reduced. Life happens, and there is no reason you should be punished for that. Please contact your Regional Training Consultant who will be able to assist you.

So, if you want to take advantage of the many opportunities you have as a PADI professional once again, what are your retraining options if you have had a lapse in your membership?

Firstly, complete the requirements outlined in the PADI Member Update Webinar. The next level would be a more robust online Instructor Update. Following that, another way to regain Teaching status would be to complete the OWSI course with a PADI Course Director. To find your nearest Course Director, use the new PADI Dive Shop Locator. If you have been out of status for too long to qualify for any of these options, then it’s time for another IDC/IE. However, the first step, as mentioned above, is for you to speak with a Regional Training Consultant to find out exactly what you need.

Once you have access to the PADI Pros’ Site, it’s a great idea to review the Training Bulletins that you will have missed since being away and to download the latest Instructor Manual to keep yourself familiar with the latest skills and standards. We have similar levels of retraining for PADI Divemaster, Assistant Instructor, EFR Instructor PADI Freediver Instructor, and PADI Mermaid Instructor.
