Emergency Responder: Hongjie Guan
Action: Guan was having breakfast when people suddenly gathered around a man at a table nearby. The man appeared to be choking on his food and couldn’t speak. Guan asked the crowd to move away and call EMS, then lifted the man’s head and performed abdominal thrusts. The man threw up and briefly recovered, but a moment later he passed out. Realizing the man had stopped breathing, Guan laid him down on the floor and administered CPR for seven minutes until the paramedics arrived and took over. It was later found that the man had a medical condition that had led to a heart attack. He underwent surgery and is now recovering.
