Having a Ball!
To offer DDI scuba diving qualifications to individuals with physical challenges or mental impairment at the same cost as that available to able bodied divers, 3D is raising funds at various events over the next year and plan to make these annual occasions. The first of these events is the ‘No Barriers Ball’ on 23rd November 2013, at the Pump Rooms in Bath. Tickets are £45 and include a glass of prosecco on arrival, a light meal comprising of savoury and sweet bowl food, and dancing to the fabulous “Bring Down the House” (Motown/soul band). The black tie event starts at 8 pm and finishes at midnight. Full disabled access to the event is provided via the entrance in Abbey Churchyard.
No Barriers
The concept of No Barriers was the brainchild of Fraser Bathgate, DDI Course Director. He launched the concept as a means of letting people know that there are no barriers to learning scuba diving and that all you need is enthusiasm. 3D will be running No Barriers Tours to give people a taste of the scuba diving experience.
Benefits
For amputees, the loss of a limb can mean loss of movement on land and cumbersome equipment but underwater you regain freedom of movement, weightlessness and the opportunity to move in 3 dimensions. For someone suffering from PTSD the 100% concentration required when learning to dive can leave no room for thought and so give some respite from the condition. Diving can be a relaxing and liberating experience for many people. Using phrases such as physically challenged and mentally impaired implies that there are ways around it and that you can be enabled rather than disabled and enjoy the amazing experience of floating in liquid space.
