There appears to be a misperception that Emergency First Response® (EFR®) courses are not recognised in Australia. This is not true. Let’s take the myth out of teaching EFR in Australia, or teaching EFR anywhere in the world to people living in or going to Australia.
The all-important question to ask potential students is: Do you seek CPR and first aid training because you need if for your workplace in Australia?
If the answer is no
All EFR participant and instructor level courses can be taught to anyone looking to gain confidence to care in non-workplace related situations. This includes being prepared to offer aid to family, friends, neighbours, youth groups, church groups, retirement communities, clubs, etc. EFR Care for Children is especially designed for moms and dads with infants and children, and for grandparents too, of course.
EFR Primary and Secondary Care course completion within two years meets prerequisites for all recreational diver courses, for International Yacht Training (IYT) in the Asia Pacific region (including Australia and New Zealand), and for Australia Council for Teaching Swimming and Water Safety (AUSTSWIM).
EFR Instructors and Instructor Trainers can teach EFR courses in Australia for all of the above mentioned groups. Remember that when teaching EFR to people in or from Australia, you need to ensure they know of and follow the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC/ANZCOR) guidelines that are clearly listed in all Emergency First Response course materials. Note that ARC recommends annual CPR refresher training; the EFR CPR & AED course meets this recommendation
To promote your EFR courses, use the EFR Marketing Kit available from your Emergency First Response Regional Headquarters.
If the answer is yes
If your students need CPR and first aid training for their workplace in Australia, please make them aware that their employer is likely to require them to hold Nationally Recognised Training. Most commonly they need a certificate or statement of attainment in HLTAID003 Provide first aid. This and other first aid related courses need to be conducted through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) by trainers holding a current Australia Certificate IV in Training & Assessment (TAE40116).
EFR Instructors and Instructor Trainers who hold a Cert IV TAE40116 can register with PADI Asia Pacific’s RTO (ID#6729) to deliver Nationally Recognised Training in Australia.
