A quick bio from Su-Li Wong:
“I began my diving adventures when I was 15 in the less temperate waters off the UK. I firmly caught the diving bug during my travels around Asia, and became a PADI Instructor at 21. During my initial years as a PADI Professional, I was passionate about guiding divers, and giving people the chance to enjoy the sites and aquatic life as much as I do.
After I returned to the UK in 2006, I joined the team at PADI International Ltd. as a Training and Quality Management (TQM) Co-ordinator. Whilst working within the TQM Department I gained considerable experience learning from my knowledgeable and highly enthusiastic mentors.
During my time at PADI I’ve developed my expertise around training standards and quality management, with a focus on Incident Reports. With much support and encouragement from PADI I was delighted to become a TQM Consultant. I feel privileged to be part of such fantastic team at PADI EMEA Ltd. and I’m looking forward to the exciting years ahead.”
Fun stuff…
When did you first learn to dive? – On a cold wintery weekend in Portland which is off the coast of the UK. I’ve just reached the age when it was half of my lifetime ago.
How many dives have you done? – 1000+
What is the first bit of dive equipment you bought? – Someone bought me a knife which was the first piece of dive kit I owned. I’m not sure what they thought we divers get up to down there?!
If you could only pack one bit of dive equipment to take with you on a trip what would it be? – My Dive Computer. My little watch style computer has been diving with me for years. It’s the only one I have ever owned and it is still going strong.
What is your favourite dive site in the UK? – I loved diving with the playful seals at Lundy Island.
What is your favourite dive site in the world? – It has to be the Liberty Wreck just off Tulamben in Bali. Straight from the shore you drop onto the wreck which rests in black sand surrounded by crystal clear waters. There was only me and very best friend on that dive site for 3 days. You can easily drop beyond 35m spotting critters in the sand, but back up on and around the Liberty Wreck we spent hours and hours at 5 metres. There was so much life to see it was just incredible!
What song do you currently like to listen to before you go diving? – Let’s talk about fish baby, let’s talk about fish. Let’s talk about all the good fish and the bad fish… babeeeeeee! (Nah, I just made that one up!) If I am not driving, I am usually asleep.
What is your favourite animal underwater? – I can’t have just one! I’ve always been intrigued by the intelligent Octopus.
One of my favorite scenes on dive sites are there shoals of beautiful Bat Fish. They’re so elegant. Like majestic moons hanging in the ocean.
Garden Eels are such fun! I love watching them pop in and out of the sand and divers go near… then I sit back, waiting for them to all pop back up.
And finally…Squid! Awesome colour changing, highly under rated creatures which glide past you in formation – just like troops of space ships on a mission.
For me and my curiosity, often the simple pleasures of underwater life are the best!
What animal would you love to see on your next dive? – The Loch Ness Monster? Really the list of aquatic life I would love to see on my next dive is endless. I would love to see anything I have never seen before, and everything I have ever seen again!
What dive site is at the top of your to wish list? – They say you should never go back but I will never write off sites like Liberty Wreck. The dive sites I love will continue to stay on my wish list forever. I will say that one of my big ambitions would be to jump into a Sardine Run.
What sort of food do you pack in your lunch box to eat between dives? – I’m not usually hungry in-between dives, but I do enjoy the tasty cooked dishes you tuck into at lunch on the dive boats in Thailand.
If you could go diving with someone (dead or alive) who would it be? – My cat Rocky. He would love the fish but I’m sure he wouldn’t agree to the wet and soggy bit.
